Ritz’s Post Marathon Recovery

March 9, 2012

In this Runner’s World Chat, Dathan Ritzenhein talks about needing 4-5 weeks of lower volume, lower intensity training following the Olympic marathon trials:

It’s been pretty basic. We’ve done some shorter tempo runs, even at the same pace we were doing the long ones. But I needed four or five weeks of training where it was just kind of light. The volume was a little lighter and the workouts were not hard. We’re trying not to lose the gains I’d made for the marathon, but the body, especially the endocrine system and stuff,  really needs a rest after a long hard effort like that. So I haven’t been doing a lot of hard intervals and stuff like that. We’re just starting to get into intervals again that are harder. So there was definitely some down time.

Later in the interview, he also mentions a key 1/2 marathon tempo run — 5-8 miles at HM pace.
