This WSJ story has a number of interesting details about Bernard Lagat’s training.

First, on the subject of rest, Lagat takes 5 weeks off at the end of September and 1-2 weeks off at the end of March.

Second, Lagat provided a typical ‘base’ training week:

Mon: 8 miles at 5:45 pace (5k pace + 39%)

Tue: 500’s with 300 at 42 (1500 pace) + 200 at 26 (800 pace)

Wed: hill session

Thu: 8 miles at 5:45 pace (5k pace + 39%)

Fri: 5 mile tempo w/ last 3 at 5:00 pace (5k + 20%)

Sat: 13 miles at 5:32 pace (5k pace + 34%)

Sun: off

Max weekly miles = 65-70
