Here are a few excerpts about Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels’ training:

An example of a workout I have them do on their own every break is a 10-mile tempo that goes right into 10 x 1 minute on/1 minute off and then into 4 x 30 seconds on/30 seconds off.

When we come back from break I give them what I call the “naughty or nice workout,” which is 20 x 200m at mile pace with a 200m jog recovery in 60 seconds.

We try to do hills every other week [during indoor season] and stay outside as much as we can. But we stay pretty strength-oriented all the way through indoors and kind of use the races to get us fit…

We’re always doing a lot of threshold, and intensity is never really all that high although we’ll touch on it a little bit here and there. Betsy and Meaghan both ran 90 miles the week of nationals so we didn’t back down for the meet. The intensity went down and we didn’t work out real hard the Tuesday of that week, but they still ran 90 miles and got in 10 or 12 miles on the Wednesday before the 5K on Friday. So we don’t back down for indoors, we train through it.

We only did one workout last week, a threshold on the track. And we’ll be on the track once this week and it’ll be hills next week. We’ve still got 8 or 10 weeks until nationals so it’s a long ways away and we’ve got to get the work in now. We’re doing 90 minutes every Saturday.
